National Cyber Directorate Warns of New SIM Swapping Scam

Israel's National Cyber Directorate has issued a warning regarding a new online scam circulating on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The fraudulent advertisements impersonate well-known companies, offering free tickets or benefits for events to lure users into divulging personal information.

According to the warning, after users provide their details, attackers contact them and request an SMS verification code. This code, if provided, can be used to take control of the victim's cellular line, a process known as SIM swapping. The Directorate emphasizes that users should never share verification codes with anyone, even if they claim to be representatives of legitimate companies.

Users are advised to carefully read the content of any SMS message before using the provided code. It is also recommended to verify offers, tickets, and benefits exclusively through official company channels, avoiding suspicious ads or links shared on social media.

Individuals who have already shared a code and subsequently lost cellular reception are urged to immediately contact their mobile provider to report suspected SIM swapping.
