Dongfeng Majie Plug-In Hybrid Offers Low Price but Falls Short on Safety and Comfort

Dongfeng Majie, a plug-in hybrid SUV priced at 150,000 shekels, has entered the Israeli market as one of the cheapest options, undercutting competitors like the JAC 7 Plug-In by about 30,000 shekels. The vehicle is larger and well-equipped, featuring a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine combined with an electric motor producing a total of 299 horsepower. It offers spacious interiors, a panoramic sunroof, and a large 525-liter trunk, making it attractive for buyers seeking size and value.

Despite its appealing price and features, the Majie suffers from several drawbacks. It has a low safety rating from the Israeli Ministry of Transport, scoring only 3 out of 8, and lacks advanced safety systems such as blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking during reversing. The vehicle’s active safety features rely solely on cameras without radar backup, leading to frequent unexpected disengagements of adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist without clear warnings.

The car’s ergonomics are also problematic, with many functions controlled via touchscreen, requiring drivers to divert attention from the road. It does not have native Android Auto support, relying instead on a locally installed dongle that proved unreliable during testing. Rear seat comfort is compromised by low seating, and the suspension, while soft on smooth roads, struggles with rough surfaces, producing excessive noise and instability in corners.

Performance is adequate but not impressive, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 10.6 seconds and a top speed of 176 km/h. The electric-only range is about 70 km in mixed driving, slightly below the manufacturer’s claim of 81 km. Fuel consumption during testing averaged 16 km per liter, less efficient than some non-plug-in hybrids. Charging supports 3.3 kW AC and up to 39 kW DC fast charging.

Overall, the Dongfeng Majie is best suited for buyers prioritizing size and low purchase price, such as company car recipients benefiting from tax advantages. However, its safety shortcomings, comfort issues, and inconsistent technology limit its appeal compared to other new and used vehicles available in Israel. The vehicle comes with a six-year or 210,000 km warranty for the car and eight years for the battery.
