Israeli Drag Performer Shares Struggles with Sleep Apnea and Work-Life Balance

The story · English

An Israeli drag performer and media spokesperson detailed his ongoing battle with sleep issues, including severe sleep apnea, which was only diagnosed two years ago. He typically sleeps from 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m., often falling asleep exhausted on the couch after long workdays and drag performances. Despite short naps, he experiences cognitive decline risks associated with chronic sleep deprivation, similar to historical figures like Margaret Thatcher.

After gaining 50 kilograms following a back injury that ended his professional dance career, he developed obstructive sleep apnea, with up to 55 breathing interruptions per hour. Since using a CPAP machine, he reports improved sleep quality and daytime focus, though the device is uncomfortable and limits sleeping positions. He has lost 20 kilograms since diagnosis and lifestyle changes.

He described his past nightlife habits, including heavy drinking and late nights, which he now limits to one drink per evening. His weekly drag shows in Tel Aviv require extensive preparation, often leaving him exhausted and sometimes falling asleep with makeup on. He balances this with his role as a father, sharing custody of his daughters and managing disrupted sleep during their childhood.

He keeps personal items by his bed, including his CPAP machine, phone, air conditioner remote, jewelry box, self-help cards, and books related to parenting and work management. His story highlights the challenges of maintaining health and family life amid demanding creative and professional commitments.
