Beitar Jerusalem Legend Shimon Tchernuha Dies at 78
Shimon Tchernuha, one of the greatest icons of Beitar Jerusalem football club, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 78. Known as a tough defender and a feared opponent by rival strikers, Tchernuha was the first Beitar player to represent and score for the Israel national team. He rose through Beitar's youth ranks and made his senior debut in 1966. In 1971, he transferred to Maccabi Netanya, where he played for two years and won the Israeli championship in the 1970/71 season, the only major title of his career.
Beitar Jerusalem issued an official statement expressing condolences to Tchernuha's family, with club owner Barak Abramov calling him a symbol of Beitar who proudly wore the club's emblem.
