Israeli Broadcaster Launches Digital Project Highlighting Arab Society Violence Victims

תורגם ותומצת מתוך Maariv על ידי baba
The story · English

The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation's Arabic division, Kan and Makan, has launched a new digital project titled "Portrait of Death" (لوحة موت) to spotlight victims of violence in the Arab community. This initiative responds to the rising violence and crime rates within Arab society by humanizing victims beyond statistics, presenting illustrated portraits and family testimonies to share their personal stories.

Each episode features an illustrated portrait by artist Munib Kablan and narratives from relatives and close acquaintances, revealing the victims' dreams, personalities, and the void their deaths have left. One highlighted case is that of Nabil Safieh, a 15-year-old from the village of Yasif, who was fatally shot on November 26, 2025. Nabil was an innocent victim, struck by a bullet intended for someone else while returning home from school.

Family and friends remember Nabil as a beloved, ambitious, and lively youth, with a particularly close bond to his sister, Sham, whom he considered a soulmate. His death deeply affected his family, school, and community, who continue to honor his memory. Sham Safieh expressed the family's pain and rejected the notion that her brother's death was accidental, stating, "In murder, there is no such thing as a mistake. Whoever kills by 'mistake' destroys an entire family." The project aims to restore the human dimension to these tragedies and foster public awareness about the ongoing violence in Arab communities.
