Family Demands Police Stop Night Visits Amid Father’s Medical Recovery Under Administrative Detention

The story · English

The family of a young man placed under an administrative detention order to remain under house arrest has petitioned the Israeli police to cease their frequent visits to their home, which they say disrupt the father's medical recovery. The father recently underwent two surgeries, including an emergency operation, and remains in a fragile condition requiring extended rest. The family, represented by attorney Adi Kedar from the legal aid organization Honenu, claims the detention order was issued without consulting them about the feasibility of house arrest and that police visits, especially at night, severely impact the family’s daily life and the father’s health.

Attorney Kedar detailed that the father suffers severe pain and is connected to a drain, making the police visits a serious strain. The family also reports that their young children are traumatized by the police presence, fearing to sleep in their beds and preferring to stay at friends’ homes. The letter cites two recent incidents: police entering through a half-open door waking the father abruptly, and a late-night visit involving loud knocking lasting about half an hour until a community officer intervened.

Despite the family’s clear refusal to have the young man remain at their home, the police continue enforcement. The family has proposed alternative detention arrangements and is awaiting a response from the authorities. They request that police respect their situation and allow the father to recover without further disturbance.

The Israeli police responded that the administrative detention order was signed by the Central Command chief and that the police have no authority to alter its terms. They emphasized their legal responsibility to supervise the order around the clock and stated they have acted sensitively according to the family’s circumstances. The police advised the family to seek changes through the courts or Central Command. The family remains in limbo, awaiting approval of their proposed alternative detention location and a revised order.
