Rare Photos Capture First Yahrzeit of Rabbi Yaakov Israel Kanievsky in Bnei Brak

The story · English

On the 41st anniversary of the passing of Rabbi Yaakov Israel Kanievsky, known as the Steipler Gaon and leader of the Torah world, photographer Shuki Lerer has released rare historical images from his acclaimed book "B'Tzeilem." These photos document the first yahrzeit (anniversary of death) held in 1986, one year after the Steipler's passing.

Central to the images is Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, the Steipler's son and successor, delivering the main memorial lesson at the Lederman synagogue in Bnei Brak. Surrounding him are prominent Torah sages of Bnei Brak at the time, including Rabbi Yaakov Galinsky, Rabbi Zalman Drori, and Rabbi Aryeh Shechter, attentively listening to his teachings.

The documentation also shows the historic procession to the Steipler's gravesite at the Shomrei Shabbat - Zichron Meir cemetery in Bnei Brak, where thousands of Torah leaders and scholars gathered to pray for divine mercy. Notably, Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky maintained a traditional distance of four cubits from the grave during prayers, following the custom of his uncle, the Chazon Ish.

This rare photo gallery evokes a deep sense of reverence and nostalgia for the era of these Torah luminaries who shaped the religious world. The release coincides with the 41st yahrzeit of the Steipler, highlighting his enduring spiritual legacy.
