Tiberias Launches Ambitious Urban Renewal and Tourism Revival Plans Amid Earthquake Risks
Tiberias is embarking on a major transformation after years of neglect and political instability. The city plans to invest hundreds of millions of shekels in revitalizing tourism, constructing 7,000 new housing units, building eight new hotels around the Sea of Galilee, and completely renewing the city’s promenade. These efforts aim not only to restore Tiberias’ former prominence but also to address the critical safety risks posed by its location on the Syrian-African fault line.
Mayor Yossi Neveah emphasized the urgency of urban renewal as a life-saving measure, warning that nearly 600 buildings in the city could collapse in a 6.5 magnitude earthquake, potentially causing 1,830 deaths within 30 seconds. He highlighted the lack of sufficient government support for peripheral urban renewal projects and called for tailored solutions beyond economic considerations, including high-rise developments up to 25 floors to maximize safety and housing.
Since taking office after two decades of political chaos, Neveah has adopted most of the existing development plans, including a framework agreement with the government and infrastructure upgrades. The city is advancing 15 urban renewal projects, with four showing significant progress. Additionally, the municipality is promoting a government agreement to build 7,000 new housing units across five neighborhoods, with ongoing construction of roads, schools, and infrastructure.
Tourism is a key focus, with over 200 million shekels already invested in renovating the lakeside promenade and removing obstructive stalls. Around eight new hotels are planned or under construction near the Sea of Galilee, alongside major projects within Tiberias, including the refurbishment of the Club Hotel. Neveah also noted the city’s role in hosting 16,000 to 17,000 evacuees from northern communities during recent conflicts and the renovation of 90% of public bomb shelters.
Looking ahead, Neveah welcomes the government’s recent decision to increase urban renewal funding in northern Israel, which includes a subsidy of approximately 180,000 shekels per housing unit for developers. He also announced progress in attracting three defense industry factories to create jobs, underscoring employment as a critical goal for Tiberias’ future.
