Erdogan Expands Turkish Influence Across Middle East Through Energy and Military Moves

מאת דין שמואל אלמס

The story · English

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has solidified Syria as a Turkish client state and is actively expanding his regional influence across the Middle East. Recently, Erdogan leveraged Iraq's difficulties exporting oil amid tensions with Iran to broker a deal for Iraq to export oil through Turkey, bypassing the Strait of Hormuz. This agreement aims to increase Iraqi oil exports from 170,000 to at least 750,000 barrels per day, with ambitions to reach 1.5 million barrels daily. Concurrently, Erdogan hosted Lebanese President Michel Aoun in Ankara, signaling Turkey's intent to increase its military presence in Lebanon, especially as the UN peacekeeping mandate in southern Lebanon is set to expire by year-end.

Turkey's energy dependence, particularly on Russian oil and gas, has driven Erdogan's strategy to transform Turkey into a regional energy hub. Ankara has invested heavily in pipeline infrastructure to facilitate energy transit from the Persian Gulf to Europe. The recent Iraqi oil export deal, including BP and Turkey's TPAO acquiring stakes in Iraqi oil fields, reflects Ankara's efforts to capitalize on regional energy disruptions caused by Iran's blockade of Hormuz.

In Lebanon, Erdogan's outreach includes discussions on deploying Turkish forces in the south, aiming to fill the security vacuum expected after UNIFIL's withdrawal. Erdogan emphasized Turkey's readiness to assist Lebanon's reconstruction, estimated at $11 billion, and encouraged Lebanese-Syrian dialogue to improve bilateral relations. However, Lebanon's complex political landscape, including Hezbollah's influence and Iranian activity, complicates Turkish ambitions.

Experts note that Turkey's assertiveness in Iraq and Lebanon contrasts with its established control over Syria, where Erdogan's influence is strongest. The strategic moves reflect Ankara's broader goal to assert itself as a dominant regional power by exploiting energy routes and security dynamics amid shifting US and Iranian roles in the region.
