Erdogan Expands Turkish Envoy's Role in Syria Amid Israeli Concerns

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expanded the mandate of Turkey's ambassador to Syria, granting him additional responsibilities in political, security, and military affairs, despite Israeli warnings against Turkish intervention. The ambassador, based in Damascus, added the title "Special Representative of the Foreign Minister for Syrian Affairs" to his social media profiles, alongside his ambassadorial role.

This new designation suggests the ambassador's duties now extend beyond traditional diplomatic representation. He is expected to monitor sensitive issues, coordinate between various Turkish institutions operating in Syria, and relay developments directly to Ankara's decision-making centers. This move signifies a broader Turkish engagement with Syrian affairs.

The expansion of the ambassador's role comes at a time when Turkey is increasing its political and military presence in Syria, a development Israel has actively sought to counter. Earlier in the month, the Israeli Air Force reportedly struck a Turkish military outpost in northwestern Syria. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant described the Turkish military buildup as a "dangerous adventure."

While Erdogan appears to be shifting focus from direct military confrontation, this diplomatic maneuver indicates a continued effort to influence and manage affairs within Syria.
