Erdogan Warns Against Provocations as Turkey Expands Influence in Syria Amid Israeli Tensions

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared on social media that Turkey is shaping the history of the region and cannot be stopped by provocations, following an unusual Turkish military deployment in Syria's Idlib province. Erdogan emphasized that Turkey will not deviate from its path despite provocations, signaling a firm stance amid rising regional tensions.

The remarks come about a week after Turkey attempted to install radars and surface-to-air missiles at Idlib airport, raising concerns from Israeli officials. A senior Israeli defense source warned that Turkey's advanced systems in Syria could threaten Israel's freedom of action, particularly regarding potential airstrikes on Iran. Israel reportedly warned Turkey against this deployment but to no avail.

Regional dynamics are further complicated by reports from Gulf sources that Turkey aims to solidify its presence in Syria with Damascus's consent, supported by Saudi Arabia due to concerns over Iran. Turkish officials have also indicated a preference for pushing Russia out of Syria, aligning with U.S. interests.

The situation escalated after U.S. envoy Tom Barrett suggested Israel's recent deep strikes in Syria might have political motives linked to Israeli elections and controversially claimed Israel occupies the Golan Heights, contradicting UN positions. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz strongly rebuked Barrett's statements, affirming that Israel acted on clear intelligence about Turkish threats and accusing Erdogan of being caught in wrongdoing.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and security officials have expressed concern over Turkey's growing influence in Syria, viewing Ankara as a potential adversary. A senior Israeli officer described Erdogan's ambitions to become the Sunni leader of the Middle East, controlling Syria, Gaza, and supporting Muslim Brotherhood factions in Egypt and Jordan. Israel fears Turkey's regional ambitions could open a new front against it.

Tensions also include Turkey's recent request to Interpol for international arrest warrants against Netanyahu and other Israelis, linked to Israel's takeover of a Gaza protest flotilla. Netanyahu condemned Erdogan as an antisemitic dictator supporting Hamas and vowed to continue strong actions against threats to regional stability and Israeli security.
