Erdogan Vows Turkey Will Not Be Deterred by Provocations Amid Rising Tensions with Israel

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared on Wednesday that provocations and conspiracies will not stop Turkey's progress, emphasizing that the country will remain steadfast on its chosen path. Although he did not mention Israel by name, his remarks come amid escalating tensions between Turkey and Israel over Turkey's military presence in Syria.

Last week, the Israeli Air Force struck the Abu al-Duhur base in northwestern Syria, citing concerns that Turkey was expanding its military footprint there, potentially deploying radar, air defense systems, and troops that could limit Israel's freedom of action. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel would not tolerate a Turkish military buildup in Syria that threatens its security, stating that Israel had sent a clear message to Ankara, which was ignored, prompting the airstrike. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz also warned Erdogan against dragging Turkey into dangerous adventures in Syria and affirmed Israel's resolve to defend itself.

Turkey and Syria denied Israel's allegations. The Turkish Defense Ministry stated no Turkish military delegation was present at the base during the strike and affirmed Ankara's commitment to supporting Syrian President Ahmad al-Assad's regime militarily. Syrian officials acknowledged Turkish officers had visited the base as part of military cooperation but denied plans to establish a permanent Turkish base there.

The rising tensions have drawn U.S. involvement, with American envoy Tom Barrett working to establish a mechanism to prevent clashes between Israel, Turkey, and Syria. Earlier this week, senior-level talks between Israel and Syria, mediated by the U.S. in Jordan, addressed ways to prevent the conflict between Jerusalem and Ankara from spilling over into Syrian territory.

Erdogan made his statements during a ceremony commemorating the 955th anniversary of the Battle of Manzikert, a pivotal event in Turkish history. He reiterated his goal of promoting a "Turkey without terror" and a "terror-free region," stressing that Turkey must remain strong and united.
