Ireland’s Removal of Israeli System from Government Jet Risks Operational Limits and Costs €53 Million

The story · English

Ireland purchased a Falcon 6X government jet from French manufacturer Dassault for approximately €53 million to replace its old official aircraft and transport the Prime Minister, ministers, and other senior officials. However, the Irish government decided to remove the advanced Israeli FalconEye landing assistance system, developed by Elbit Systems, from the aircraft due to political considerations. FalconEye is regarded as one of the most advanced technologies worldwide for aiding landings in poor visibility and adverse weather conditions.

Local Irish media and aviation experts have expressed concerns that without the Israeli system, the Falcon 6X’s ability to safely land in fog and stormy weather is compromised. Pilots may be forced to divert to alternate airports instead of completing landings at their intended destinations. Dassault promotes FalconEye as providing enhanced navigation and landing capabilities day and night under complex weather by integrating sensor data directly into the cockpit.

Despite these reports, the Irish government has denied any operational limitations on the aircraft. Insiders familiar with the project, however, believe that removing the Israeli system has reduced the jet’s operational capabilities. Ironically, Ireland’s strong political stance against Israeli defense industries is not consistently applied, as four Airbus helicopters ordered by Ireland include the Helionix system, co-developed by Elbit and Airbus, and the country’s new maritime patrol aircraft is equipped with Israeli radar systems, where no alternatives were feasible.

This situation highlights the tension between political decisions and operational needs, potentially costing Ireland both financially and in aviation safety.
