Jerusalem Left-Wing Rally Dispersed After Clashes and Road Blockades

The story · English

A left-wing protest in Jerusalem’s Paris Square on Saturday evening escalated into clashes, road closures and a police intervention after the event turned into an unauthorized march. Jerusalem District police and Border Police were deployed after the demonstration began violating the agreed terms and disrupted local residents and traffic in the area.

According to police, participants started using powerful sound equipment before Shabbat ended, near homes in surrounding neighborhoods, causing a significant nuisance. An officer at the scene repeatedly warned the crowd to stop using the loudspeakers and comply with the approved conditions, but the demonstrators refused. Police then seized the sound equipment while it was still operating.

The confiscation intensified the situation, and the protesters launched an unapproved procession and actively blocked major traffic routes around the square, halting vehicle movement. Police said the march had no legal permit and constituted a serious breach of public order.

After another announcement from the officer, Border Police and regular officers moved in and used what police described as reasonable force to push the crowd back, reopen the blocked roads, and restore public order. The police also noted that the protest conditions at Paris Square had previously been given legal force by the High Court of Justice in cases concerning restrictions on political demonstrations there.
