Israeli Docuseries Sparks Debate Over Young Women Caught Smuggling Drugs

The story · English

The Israeli docuseries "Pink Suitcases," which premiered recently on yes, centers on a 2023 drug smuggling case involving four young women caught at Ben Gurion Airport with suitcases full of narcotics. Two of the women, Or-El Ben Haim and Arbel Mizrahi, are prominently featured and have gained media attention, while the other two, Lee Pony and Idan Zauber, appear with blurred faces. The series explores their backgrounds and the circumstances that led to their involvement in smuggling large quantities of cocaine and ketamine, worth approximately 2.5 million shekels.

Created by acclaimed Israeli documentarians Mor Loshi and Daniel Sivan, known for their Netflix hit "The Reality Ground," the series delves into themes of exploitation, societal decline, and the media circus following the arrests. It highlights the police’s initial mistake of arresting the women at customs instead of tracking their operators and examines the young women’s portrayal as victims of patriarchy and circumstance. However, the women themselves show no remorse or acceptance of responsibility, and their social media activity contradicts claims of victimization.

The series also reveals the women's professional conduct during interrogations, where they exercised their right to silence and maintained loyalty to their handlers. Both Ben Haim and Mizrahi describe feelings of alienation and betrayal in their personal lives, blaming social media for promoting false images of happiness. The documentary has sparked public debate on drug smuggling severity and youth drug use in Israel, but it leaves viewers questioning the balance between victimhood and accountability in the story.
