Visa Acquires Israeli Biometric Fraud Prevention Firm BioCatch for $2.4 Billion
Visa has announced the acquisition of Israeli cybersecurity company BioCatch for $2.4 billion, two years after the investment firm Permira acquired a controlling stake in BioCatch for $1.3 billion. Founded in 2011 by Avi Turgeman and the late Benny Rosenbaum, BioCatch specializes in biometric and behavioral technology to detect and prevent fraud in the banking sector. The company experienced slow growth until 2018, when Gadi Mazor was appointed CEO. At that time, BioCatch's revenue was $7 million with a valuation of $100 million. By 2023, the company achieved a 49% growth rate, reaching an annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $100 million.
BioCatch's technology uses behavioral biometrics to distinguish legitimate account users from criminals who have taken control of accounts through fraud or extortion. Its algorithm analyzes digital behavior patterns based on 300 parameters, including typing speed and mouse handling, to identify suspicious activity and prevent fraud and money laundering.
This acquisition reflects Visa's strategy to enhance its fraud prevention capabilities by integrating advanced biometric solutions. The deal marks a significant valuation increase for BioCatch within a short period, highlighting the growing importance of cybersecurity in financial services.
