Sea of Galilee Water Level Nears Critical Low Amid Heatwave Warning

The story · English

The Sea of Galilee's water level was measured at 213.015 meters below sea level on Monday morning, just 15 centimeters above the previously defined "lower red line" critical threshold. This measurement serves as a warning sign for the lake's deteriorating condition amid a severe heatwave with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius around the lake. The "lower red line" was originally set at 212 meters below sea level based on engineering limits for the operation of Mekorot's pumping stations at the Sapir site, below which pump efficiency and system stability are compromised.

Due to prolonged droughts in the late 1980s, the water level dropped close to 212 meters, prompting authorities to lower the critical threshold to 213 meters to maintain water supply for domestic and agricultural needs. In late summer 2001, the Sea of Galilee reached a historic low of 214.87 meters below sea level, surpassing the lower red line and leading to the establishment of a "black line" at 214 meters. Crossing this black line prohibits any water pumping to prevent ecological damage and severe impacts on tourism.

The Sea of Galilee Regional Association has advised visitors to stay hydrated, seek shade, and protect gas canisters from direct sunlight due to the extreme heat. The current water level situation highlights ongoing environmental challenges and the need for careful water management to sustain the lake's ecosystem and regional water supply.
