Monty Goldstein, a British World War II veteran, marked his 102nd birthday surrounded by family but expressed deep concern over the rise of antisemitism and hate crimes in the United Kingdom. Having served in the British Army since 1943, defending London from Nazi air raids, Goldstein now fears for the safety of Jewish communities, particularly in areas like Golders Green, where some residents reportedly avoid walking the streets due to fear. He lamented that modern Britain is no longer the country he knew in his youth, recalling tense times confronting fascists led by Oswald Mosley in East London.

Goldstein, a lifelong Englishman, has been active in the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women (AJEX) and regularly attends remembrance events. He criticized the current societal regression, noting that despite Jewish citizens’ efforts to be exemplary members of society, they are still treated as second-class citizens. He warned that some community members are contemplating leaving the country due to this hostile environment.

Highlighting the role of education, Goldstein urged schools to take stronger action against hatred to prevent young people from adopting antisemitic attitudes before they even get to know Jewish individuals. Despite his disappointment with the changes in Britain, he remains loyal to his country, stating, "Britain is my country, I know no other." Reflecting on his longevity, he attributed it simply to gratitude for each new day, calling life at 102 a gift.
