Emergency Responder Faces Investigation After Parking in Disabled Spot During Child Rescue in New York

The story · English

A paramedic volunteer from the Hatzalah emergency organization in Rockland County, New York, responded urgently last Friday to a critical medical emergency involving an unconscious child inside a local store in the town of Nanuet. Understanding the urgency, the paramedic parked the emergency vehicle in a disabled parking spot with flashing lights on and rushed inside to provide life-saving treatment.

However, while the paramedic was inside attending to the child, a passerby recorded the emergency vehicle parked in the disabled spot and posted the video on local Facebook groups with a critical caption. The post quickly spread, sparking hostile and antisemitic comments against Hatzalah and the local Orthodox Jewish community. The video omitted the crucial context that the vehicle was parked there solely due to the emergency, creating a misleading impression.

It later emerged that the individual who posted the video is himself a volunteer in two local emergency organizations, including the community ambulance service and the Spring Valley fire department. This revelation led community members to demand that both organizations thoroughly investigate the volunteer’s actions under their disciplinary protocols.

Following public outcry and media attention, both the community ambulance service and the Spring Valley fire department announced official internal investigations into the volunteer’s conduct. Both organizations emphasized the seriousness with which they are treating the matter and pledged comprehensive reviews according to their regulations. The community awaits the outcomes of these inquiries as the controversy continues to draw significant attention in the county.
