Maimonides Statue Defaced with Swastika in Cordoba Sparks Outrage

The story · English

A statue of Maimonides, the renowned Jewish philosopher and physician born in Cordoba, Spain, was vandalized over the weekend with a swastika spray-painted on it. The statue stands in the heart of Cordoba's Jewish quarter, the city where Maimonides was born during Spain's Golden Age. The local Jewish community condemned the act as not only an attack on a monument but on Jewish history, memory, and identity. They demanded that Spanish authorities identify and prosecute those responsible.

Spanish police have launched an investigation but have not yet apprehended any suspects. The Jewish community in Barcelona also denounced the vandalism on social media, emphasizing Maimonides' legacy as part of humanity's intellectual heritage and warning that hatred will never overcome culture. Cordoba's acting deputy mayor Cynthia Bustos called the hateful message "extreme" and a serious blow to the city's heritage. Local council member Antonio Hurtado urged immediate cleaning of the statue, highlighting the damage to both people and the city's rich history.

Authorities covered the statue with a protective sign pending cleanup, and a specialized team was brought in to remove the swastika. Maimonides, also known as Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, was a leading Jewish legal scholar, philosopher, and physician who served as the personal doctor to the Sultan of Egypt and led Jewish communities during his era. The incident reflects ongoing antisemitism in Europe and has drawn widespread condemnation from Jewish organizations and local officials alike.
