The story · English

An 11-and-a-half-year-old boy was seriously injured when an arrow penetrated through his sinuses into his skull during an archery activity at a summer camp. Initially, the injury appeared to be a superficial wound on the bridge of his nose, and he was taken to the pediatric emergency department at Kaplan Medical Center. However, comprehensive imaging and specialist evaluations revealed the arrow had passed through the nasal bridge and eye socket, causing a rare condition called pneumocephalus, where air enters the cranial cavity.

Doctors observed air bubbles escaping from the wound when the boy was asked to blow his nose, raising suspicion of a deeper injury. Following consultations between experts at Kaplan and Schneider Children’s Medical Center, the boy was transferred to Schneider’s pediatric intensive care unit for further multidisciplinary assessment. After thorough evaluation, it was determined that surgical intervention was unnecessary. The boy was monitored in intensive care and later moved to the surgical ward as his condition improved.

Dr. Tzafnat Yair Prokocimer, head of Kaplan’s pediatric emergency department, emphasized the importance of careful examination even when injuries appear minor, crediting the medical team’s vigilance for identifying the serious complication promptly. Dr. Nir Samuel, head of trauma services at Schneider, warned that recreational equipment like archery gear can cause life-threatening injuries and stressed the need for safety measures, close supervision, and age-appropriate activities to prevent similar incidents.
