11-Year-Old Boy Suffers Rare Skull Air Penetration After Archery Injury at Summer Camp
An 11-and-a-half-year-old boy was seriously injured during an archery activity at a summer camp when an arrow struck the upper part of his nose. Initially appearing as a minor external wound, the injury was treated at Kaplan Medical Center's pediatric emergency room, where doctors conducted thorough examinations beyond the superficial damage. Imaging tests revealed that the arrow had penetrated through the nasal bridge and eye socket, passing through the sinuses and reaching the cranial cavity, causing a rare and dangerous condition known as pneumocephalus, where air enters the skull.
The boy was transferred to Schneider Children's Medical Center for further treatment and monitoring after a multidisciplinary consultation involving specialists in otolaryngology, ophthalmology, neuro-radiology, pediatric trauma, and neurosurgery. Despite the severity of the injury, no surgical intervention was required. He was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit and later moved to the surgical ward as his condition improved.
Dr. Tzafnat Yair Prokocimer, head of Kaplan's pediatric emergency department, emphasized the importance of thorough investigation in seemingly minor injuries, noting that the quick and detailed assessment was crucial in identifying the serious complication. Dr. Nir Samuel, senior physician and trauma service director at Schneider, highlighted the risks associated with recreational archery equipment and stressed the need for safety measures, supervision, and age-appropriate activities to prevent severe injuries.
