UK Study Links Early-Life Sugar Restriction to Lower Dementia Risk in Adulthood

תורגם ותומצת מתוך Channel 13 על ידי baba
The story · English

A historical observational study conducted in the United Kingdom has revealed a surprising association between limited sugar consumption during early childhood and a reduced risk of developing dementia in later life. The research focused on the long-term effects of the sugar rationing period in the UK from 1945 to 1953. According to Professor Eitan Friedman, director of the Genetic Institute for Early Detection at Assuta Ramat Hahayal, individuals born during or within their first two years of life in this timeframe showed lower-than-average chances of developing dementia in old age.

However, Friedman stresses the need for cautious interpretation of these findings, emphasizing that the study is observational and historical rather than interventional. This means it identifies a statistical correlation but does not establish a definitive cause-and-effect relationship. He warns against simplistic conclusions such as "sugar causes Alzheimer's," which he says mislead the public.

When asked about how much candy children should consume daily, Friedman advises minimizing sugar intake. He explains that sugar is not a healthy food, containing many "empty calories," and recommends limiting especially ultra-processed sugars. Nonetheless, he clarifies that sugar is not inherently evil. Beyond restriction, Friedman encourages parents to foster healthy eating habits through negotiation rather than strict bans, promoting balanced nutrition and avoiding extremes in sugar or other food consumption as the key to long-term health.
