Early-Life Low Sugar Intake Linked to 46% Lower Alzheimer’s Risk in UK Study
A recent study published in npj Aging reveals that lower sugar exposure during the first 1,000 days of life, including prenatal and early infancy periods, is associated with significantly reduced risks of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and anxiety decades later. The research utilized a natural experiment in Britain between 1942 and 1953, when government-imposed sugar rationing limited sugar consumption to levels comparable to current recommendations, with no additional sugar allowance for children under two years old. After rationing ended in 1953, average sugar intake nearly doubled, providing a unique opportunity to compare health outcomes of individuals born during and shortly after the rationing period.
Analyzing medical data from 60,394 Britons born between 1951 and 1956, researchers found that those exposed to sugar rationing in their first 1,000 days had a 27% lower risk of developing any dementia and a 46% lower risk of Alzheimer’s specifically, compared to those born after rationing ended. They also showed an 11% lower risk of depression and 20% lower risk of anxiety, with no significant link to Parkinson’s disease. MRI scans indicated that participants exposed to postnatal sugar rationing had brains appearing on average 0.39 years younger, with larger volumes in memory-related regions such as the hippocampus and thalamus.
Dr. Gal Omri-Orbach of Maccabi Healthcare Services explained that early-life nutrition may induce "metabolic programming," influencing how the body processes nutrients and regulates hormones long-term. The first 1,000 days are critical for brain development, and lower sugar intake during this window may reduce risks of insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and metabolic disorders that impact brain health. However, the study’s observational design and confounding factors such as economic recovery and changing health practices limit causal conclusions.
The study emphasizes reducing added sugars, found in sweetened beverages, processed foods, and commercial baby products, rather than naturally occurring sugars in fruits, vegetables, and dairy. Dr. Omri-Orbach advises balanced diets during pregnancy and early childhood to support healthy brain development and cautions against overinterpreting findings from a single study. The research supports existing guidelines to limit ultra-processed foods and sugary drinks from early life to promote long-term neurological health.
