Last Thursday marked a historic day for Israeli football as four Israeli clubs advanced to the third qualifying round of various European competitions for the first time in nine years. Traditionally struggling in Europe, Beitar Jerusalem overcame teams like AEK Larnaca, while Hapoel Be'er Sheva, under coach Ran Kojukh, progressed past Vikingur. Hapoel Tel Aviv returned to European competition after a 12-year absence, and Maccabi Tel Aviv maintained its presence, setting the stage for the upcoming playoff draws across the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.
Israeli football currently ranks 25th in Europe, behind leagues such as Slovenia, Ukraine, and Croatia, but this recent success could boost Israel to 23rd place, potentially shortening qualification rounds and extending summer breaks for clubs. The goal is to reach around 21st place, where Romania currently stands. Notably, Hapoel Tel Aviv's victory over the financially stronger Bulgarian club Ludogorets was a significant achievement.
The continuity forced by Israel's security situation has helped these clubs maintain stable squads, avoiding major roster overhauls and allowing teams to build on last season's foundations. This continuity has been crucial given the difficulty in recruiting quality foreign players. For example, Hapoel Be'er Sheva faces challenges with key player departures and injuries but aims to strengthen its defense ahead of tougher matches against teams like Red Star Belgrade.
Maccabi Tel Aviv, despite finishing 13 points behind Be'er Sheva last season, has retained much of its squad and coach Kenny Miller, showing strong performances but still grappling with uncertainties regarding player departures and injuries. Beitar Jerusalem also kept most of its successful squad, with key players like Omer Atzili and Jordan Shua playing pivotal roles.
Hapoel Tel Aviv's return to Europe follows a period of turmoil involving relegations and ownership changes. Under new owner Edmond Safra and CEO Guy Primor, the club has stabilized, relying on a mostly unchanged squad with minimal new signings. Their focus now is on reinforcing attacking options and replacing sold players to sustain their European campaign.
The upcoming matches against stronger European opponents will reveal whether this breakthrough is a one-time event or signals a new era for Israeli football on the continental stage.
