During the recent Sabbath in Jerusalem, ultra-Orthodox protesters violently clashed with patrons at the "Basmeta" café after breaching police barriers, citing Sabbath desecration. This incident follows a series of threats and violent acts against businesses nationwide that have chosen to operate on Shabbat. The violent confrontations in Jerusalem have echoed the experiences of "Benedita" café owners in Ramat Gan, who have faced multiple attacks, including three arson attempts in the past two months. Authorities recently charged three ultra-Orthodox suspects from Beitar Illit with one of these arsons, alleging premeditation involving reconnaissance and use of gasoline.

Shahaf, the owner of Benedita, described the attacks as part of a disturbing trend targeting businesses open on Shabbat, emphasizing the impact on their livelihood and sense of security. Despite the violence, the café has remained open continuously. Shahaf and her partner Adi expressed frustration at being unwilling symbols in a conflict they did not seek, noting an increase in such incidents possibly linked to the political climate and elections.

Similar violence occurred in Herzliya in February, where the "Otello" ice cream shop suffered vandalism and an attempted arson after opening on Shabbat. Following these events, the owners decided to cease Shabbat operations until authorities can guarantee safety. In Dimona, tensions arose over a Super-Pharm branch opening on Shabbat, sparking protests from religious factions and some residents, though others supported the move, highlighting the city's traditional character.

Shahaf called on municipal leaders to support business owners facing such challenges, stressing the importance of solidarity and protection. The ongoing incidents underscore the deep societal divisions over Sabbath observance and the risks faced by businesses choosing to operate during this time.
