IDF Spokesperson Freezes Non-Official Social Media Accounts Amid Election Period

The IDF spokesperson, Brigadier General Effi Deferin, has ordered a freeze on the activity of many digital accounts across the Israel Defense Forces, allowing only official accounts of the army, its branches, and commands to remain active. This directive aims to regulate social media activity within the IDF, especially during the sensitive election period, to maintain governmental neutrality and message consistency.

According to the spokesperson's office, various units had independently opened social media accounts on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Telegram, and TikTok without prior approval or oversight from the IDF Spokesperson's Unit. This lack of control led to inconsistencies and public controversies. The new order suspends digital activity of divisions, brigades, and headquarters units unless explicitly approved by the spokesperson.

This decision follows several public incidents involving IDF personnel on social media. One notable case involved an IDF spokesperson soldier photographed with a controversial influencer known as "Clavicular," resulting in the soldier receiving a suspended prison sentence and reassignment. Another incident involved a social media star posting a video dancing in IDF uniform at a recruitment festival, which was removed after public criticism. The IDF clarified that the event was unauthorized and the behavior did not reflect its values.

The spokesperson's office emphasized that the move is intended to centralize digital communication under tighter supervision, reduce independent unit activity, and ensure all IDF messages on social media come through official channels only.
