The commander of the Givati Brigade, Colonel Lt. Natanel Shamka, concluded disciplinary trials for soldiers involved in a mass desertion incident at the Sde Teyman base. Fourteen leading soldiers were sentenced to 30 days imprisonment, removed from combat roles, and discharged from combat service, reflecting the severity of their breach of discipline. Approximately 80 additional soldiers who left the base without authorization but later returned will undergo a command and educational process alongside their commanders to reinforce discipline and values within the unit.
The incident occurred after a dispute between soldiers of the Sabra Battalion and their commander, triggered by the removal of metal plates and signs that veteran soldiers had placed at the base. These veterans protested the disruption of an unofficial tradition granting them privileges and exemptions from routine duties. The IDF stated the event was inconsistent with its values and expectations of soldiers.
The disciplinary measures come amid concerns about declining discipline among frontline troops, which intensified the command's response.
