Italian Football Legend Franco Baresi Dies at 66 After Cancer Battle

The story · English

Franco Baresi, the legendary Italian footballer and former AC Milan captain, passed away at the age of 66 after a battle with cancer. Baresi was a central figure in one of AC Milan's most glorious eras, playing 532 matches for the club and serving as captain for 15 years starting at age 22. He was renowned as one of the greatest defenders in football history and was nicknamed "The Emperor Franz." Baresi was also a World Cup winner with Italy in 1982 and earned 82 caps for the national team, leading Italy from 1982 to 1994.

During his career, Baresi was part of the legendary Milan defense alongside Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta, Mauro Tassotti, and Christian Panucci. Under coach Arrigo Sacchi, Milan conceded only 14 goals in the 1987/88 season. He won three European Cups (1988/89, 1989/90, 1993/94) and six Serie A titles. His number 6 jersey was retired by AC Milan, a rare honor previously given only to Maldini. Baresi was also runner-up for the Ballon d'Or, an exceptional achievement for a defender.

Internationally, Baresi was named to the 1990 World Cup All-Star team and was recognized by Pelé as one of the 125 greatest footballers of the 20th century. He was also voted Player of the Century by both AC Milan and the Italian Footballers' Association. In Israel, he is known as the second name mentioned in the song "Ve'eleh Shemot" by Arik Einstein.

Baresi's death marks the loss of one of football's all-time great defenders and a symbol of Italian football excellence.
