The story · English

The US government has announced new restrictions on autonomous robots manufactured outside the United States, primarily targeting robotic vacuum cleaners. The move stems from concerns that devices equipped with cameras, sensors, and constant internet connectivity could be exploited to collect sensitive information or be used for espionage. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) declared that new models of autonomous robots produced abroad will generally be denied marketing approval unless granted special individual exceptions.

While initial reports focused on humanoid robots, the FCC’s definition is broader, encompassing ground-based autonomous robots weighing over two kilograms with mapping systems, cameras or sensors, control software, and wireless connectivity. These features are common in advanced robotic vacuum cleaners sold in the US and Israel. The restrictions will also apply to robotic lawn mowers, delivery robots, mobile industrial robots, and autonomous logistics systems. However, medical robots, robotic wheelchairs, autonomous vehicles, trains, and drones are exempt.

US officials explained that the concern arises from the extensive data these devices collect, such as detailed home maps, images, audio recordings, and continuous network connections. This combination raises fears that sensitive information about private and commercial buildings could be accessed by hostile entities or used for spying. A notable case that heightened these concerns involved a security breach in a DJI robotic vacuum, where a researcher demonstrated the ability to remotely control thousands of robots, view camera footage, listen via microphones, and access stored home maps. Although the vulnerability was later fixed, it became a key example of cybersecurity risks in smart devices.

The new policy does not affect products already sold or models previously approved by the FCC, allowing current owners to continue using their devices without changes. Leading manufacturers such as Roborock, Dreame, Ecovacs, Narwal, and Xiaomi will face stringent regulatory requirements to market new models in the US or must relocate production domestically. The Roomba brand, historically an American icon but now under Chinese ownership, may also be impacted by these regulations.
