Israeli Election Committee Chair Urges Equal Media Access for All Parties During Campaign

The story · English

Noam Solberg, Chair of the Central Elections Committee for Israel's 26th Knesset and Deputy President of the Supreme Court, issued a letter to political parties, their representatives, and election committee members on Wednesday. The letter calls for open and equal access for all media outlets to cover public election events, including press conferences, campaign tours, preliminary election events, party headquarters coverage areas, and activities on and after election day.

Solberg emphasized that any restrictions on media access should be based solely on legitimate reasons such as security, safety, capacity, privacy, or operational constraints, and must be applied fairly and proportionately. He highlighted that the public's right to know is paramount, stating, "The right to know is not the journalist's right; it is the right of the readers, listeners, viewers, and ultimately the voters." Denying journalists access effectively excludes the public they serve.

The letter underscores that freedom of the press and information are essential for democratic elections, enabling the public to make informed decisions. Solberg urged parties to communicate their messages to audiences beyond their supporters as part of democratic discourse. He clarified that the letter is advisory, not legally binding, serving as guidance for appropriate conduct during the upcoming election campaign.

This call for equitable media access follows a recent controversy where the Democratic Party barred Channel 14's team from covering its primary elections, sparking public criticism and accusations of unequal media treatment. Although Solberg did not reference this incident directly, his principles address such issues and reinforce expectations for fair media access by all parties throughout the election period.
