Israeli Navy Reopens 'Defenders of the West' Squadron with New Sea Hawk Helicopters

The Israeli Navy has reopened Squadron 193, known as the "Defenders of the West," marking a new chapter in its maritime aviation capabilities. The squadron, based in central Israel, will now operate Sikorsky SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopters, replacing the retired French-made "Bat" helicopters that were phased out in August 2025. This transition represents the first time Sea Hawk helicopters will serve aboard Israeli Navy missile boats.

The reopening follows a transitional period since the squadron's closure in late August 2025, ending the era of French helicopters in the naval air wing. Over the past year, three Sea Hawk helicopters have arrived in Israel and are now fully operational within the squadron.

This development is part of a broader strategic vision led by the new Navy Commander, Major General Eyal Harel. His plan aims to elevate the Israeli Navy into a central strategic force by expanding the operational scope of submarines and missile boats to operate in a "third circle," similar to the Air Force's approach. This includes enhanced intelligence gathering and strike missions, reflecting a significant shift in naval doctrine and capabilities.
