Israeli Navy Reopens 'Defenders of the West' Squadron with New Sea Hawk Helicopters

The Israeli Navy has reopened Squadron 193, known as "Defenders of the West," marking a significant advancement in its maritime capabilities. The squadron, based in central Israel, now operates Sikorsky SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopters, replacing the French-made "Bat" helicopters that were retired in August 2025. This transition is the first time Sea Hawk helicopters will serve aboard Israeli Navy missile boats.

The reopening follows a transitional period after the squadron's closure in late August 2025, which ended the era of the French "Bat" helicopters. Over the past year, three Sea Hawk helicopters have arrived in Israel and are now fully operational. This upgrade is part of a broader strategic vision led by the new Navy Commander, Major General Eyal Harel, aiming to enhance the Navy's role as a central strategic force for Israel.

Under Harel's leadership, the Navy plans to expand the operational scope of its submarines and missile boats to operate in a "third circle," similar to the Air Force's approach. This includes focusing on critical missions such as intelligence gathering and strike capabilities, reflecting a shift toward more advanced and versatile maritime operations.
