The story · English

New York City Mayor Zoharan Mamdani has sparked controversy after forming an 18-member advisory committee to assist in judicial appointments that notably excludes any Jewish representatives. Despite Jews comprising about 10% of New York's population and playing a significant role in the local legal community, no Jewish lawyers, former judges, or legal professionals were included in the committee. This omission has drawn sharp criticism from four Jewish legal organizations, who sent a letter to Mamdani highlighting the lack of Jewish representation and accusing the mayor's office of marginalizing the community.

The controversy intensified when it was revealed that retired judge John Leventhal, recommended for the committee, was rejected by Mamdani's office. The city explained the decision was due to Leventhal's previous legal defense of Ghislaine Maxwell, an associate of Jeffrey Epstein, during her appeal process. Leventhal stated he was not given an official reason for his rejection and emphasized that defending clients is a standard part of criminal law practice. He also expressed hope that the absence of Jewish members on the committee was not intentional.

Mamdani's spokesperson acknowledged the absence of Jewish members but denied any discriminatory intent, asserting that the mayor has appointed judges from diverse backgrounds, including Jewish judges. The spokesperson called allegations of religious bias "false." This incident adds to ongoing tensions between Mamdani and New York's Jewish community, which recently escalated after the mayor posted a video criticizing Israel and expressing willingness to enforce an International Criminal Court arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, limited only by U.S. law.

The Jewish legal groups' letter and public outcry underscore concerns about representation and inclusivity in city governance, with the community seeking a reconsideration of the committee's composition. Mamdani's office has yet to announce any changes or responses beyond the initial denial of discrimination.
