A senior political advisor said Mamdani struggles to handle criticism, especially from public figures he believes he can pressure, and is particularly concerned about negative publicity.
This heightened sensitivity became evident after Jewish leaders in the city urged Mamdani to "stop inciting hatred" against Israel following an antisemitic stabbing attack on the Upper West Side. Mamdani reportedly called at least one official who participated in the press conference to complain about the demand to tone down his rhetoric. He was especially angry that the call for restraint was linked to a controversial video he posted days before the attack, in which he called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "war criminal." Sources suggest Mamdani's sensitivity is partly driven by the need to protect the growing political power of the socialist-democratic movement he represents. He is reportedly obsessed with avoiding negative media coverage, as illustrated by his personal plea to the Queens City Council president to withhold an honorary degree to avoid appearing self-promotional. His sensitivity extends to clashes with senior Democratic figures, including former Clinton advisor Mark Penn and ex-Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, who privately warned him about crossing boundaries, though Mamdani's spokesperson denied Emanuel's account.
