US Walks Out as France Criticizes Israel Rights Vote at UN Security Council

The United States delegation walked out of a United Nations Security Council meeting last Friday in protest against remarks made by France, sparking a diplomatic dispute over Israel's treatment at the UN. The conflict arose after the US voted against extending the term of Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, who had criticized Israel's actions in Gaza. France equated the US vote on human rights issues to that of authoritarian regimes, with the French UN mission in Geneva stating, "The US was once a beacon of human rights. Not anymore."

US Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, accused France of supporting those who "preach to democratic countries while currying favor with the world's worst oppressors." A senior US official, Dan Negreia, declared the US delegation would maintain its stance until France abandons its "condescending and disparaging rhetoric." Another US envoy, Jeff Bretous, criticized Turk's reappointment, warning of "consequences" for what he called procedural abuses and misuse of UN roles, and said the US would immediately reassess its involvement and funding.

In contrast, French Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont described Turk as a "voice of conscience" who demonstrated "rigor and impartiality" during his first term. UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq declined to comment on the US walkout but emphasized that the UN expects all member states to respect adopted decisions. This dispute highlights ongoing tensions over Israel's human rights record and the politicization of UN bodies.
