Melbourne Yeshiva Student Attacked and Threatened with Knife While Offering Tefillin

Yitzhak Lowenthal, a yeshiva student from Melbourne, Australia, was assaulted in the Bentley neighborhood while distributing challah, Shabbat candles, and offering local Jews the opportunity to put on tefillin. According to Australian media reports, Lowenthal politely approached an older man to ask if he was Jewish. After being met with curses and the man walking away, the individual followed Lowenthal, returned wielding a knife in his right hand, threatened to kill him and his accompanying young Haredi friend, and struck Lowenthal in the abdomen.

The attacker was observed watching Lowenthal as he continued knocking on Jewish homes offering tefillin. The man confronted him again, shouting accusations that Lowenthal was harassing people and repeatedly threatening to kill him. Police were quickly called to the scene and apprehended the suspect within minutes for questioning. As of the report's publication, no charges had been filed.

Despite the violent and traumatic incident, Lowenthal gave his testimony to the police, retrieved his tefillin, and resumed visiting homes to encourage more Jews to perform the mitzvah, continuing his weekly practice.
