Jewish Family Endures Multiple Antisemitic Attacks at Melbourne Airport

A Jewish family with three young children was subjected to three separate antisemitic harassment incidents at Melbourne International Airport on August 24. An unidentified woman repeatedly targeted the family members in different terminal locations over approximately 45 minutes, hurling slurs such as "Zionist pigs," "Nazis," and "child murderers." The Australian Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) has called for an immediate investigation by federal police to identify and apprehend the perpetrator.

The family, described as a large Australian-Israeli family, was preparing to fly to Israel after a celebration in Melbourne. The first encounter involved the father, wearing a kippah, who was approached by the woman near security. She shouted, "Oh, you're a Zionist!" before escalating to direct insults, calling him a "Zionist pig" and accusing him of killing children, which frightened his 11-year-old daughter. Minutes later, the same woman confronted another group of family members near the screening area, including the father's sister, her husband (also wearing a kippah), their infant son, and a four-year-old daughter. The woman continued her tirade with accusations of "child murderers," "Zionist Nazis," and "genocide," causing the mother to cry and plead for the abuse to stop, especially in front of the children.

The harassment continued a third time near the boarding gate, where one of the men encountered the woman again at a coffee shop. She loudly called him a "Zionist child murderer" to other patrons. Airport security eventually intervened after the third incident, escorting the family to a separate screening area to prevent further contact and offering assistance with their luggage. They were also advised to file an official complaint.

Although the family did not file a complaint immediately due to stress and time constraints before their flight, they later informed the ADC they were prepared to provide statements to the Australian Federal Police (AFP). One family member, speaking anonymously to the Daily Telegraph after arriving in Israel, expressed fear for his family's safety and noted increased caution regarding displaying Jewish identity at public events since the October 7th attacks. The Melbourne Airport administration stated they received no immediate official complaint but condemned antisemitism and pledged cooperation with the investigation.

Dr. Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the ADC, condemned the incident as a reflection of escalating antisemitic hatred in Australia. He highlighted the difficult choice faced by Australian Jews between openly expressing their identity and facing abuse, or concealing it. Abramovich reiterated the demand for the AFP to investigate thoroughly and hold the woman accountable, stating, "When an 11-year-old Jewish girl is sobbing at the airport after hearing her father called a child murderer, it means something in the soul of this country has died, and we are witnessing its funeral."
