Beware QR Code Scams in Parking Lots and Restaurants Targeting Personal Data

The story · English

QR codes have become ubiquitous in daily life, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, used for everything from ordering food in restaurants to paying for parking. However, this convenience has led to a dangerous blind trust that scammers exploit through a method known as "quishing."

Quishing involves criminals placing fake QR code stickers over legitimate ones on devices like parking meters, charging stations, or restaurant tables. These malicious codes redirect users through trusted services such as Google or Amazon to evade security filters, ultimately leading to counterfeit login pages mimicking banks or other trusted platforms. Victims are then pressured to enter sensitive personal information, often through urgent messages about account expiration.

The scam also extends to QR codes embedded in PDFs sent via email, bypassing traditional text-based security scans. To protect themselves, users are advised to physically inspect QR codes for suspicious overlays or unusual textures, preview links before opening, and watch for warning signs like unsecured URLs, misspelled brand names, or shortened links. Users should avoid entering passwords or downloading files immediately after scanning.

While QR codes remain a useful tool, the key to safety lies in abandoning automatic trust and taking a moment to verify the code and the link it generates. This simple caution can prevent falling victim to cyber theft and identity fraud.
