Satmar Rebbe Visits New York Prison to Support Jewish Inmates

מאת משה ויסברג
תורגם ותומצת מתוך Behadrei Haredim על ידי baba
The story · English

A rare and emotional visit took place at Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Ulster County, New York, when the Satmar Rebbe, Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum, came to offer spiritual support to Jewish inmates, including Nechemia Tzvi ben Dina, who is unfortunately imprisoned there. The visit was organized and facilitated by the 'Tzedek' organization. Senior officials from Albany, the state capital, also attended, providing a unique opportunity to discuss the religious needs of Jewish prisoners in depth.

The event began with remarks from Anshil Schwartz, a leading activist from Tzedek, who highlighted the unique challenges Jewish inmates face and emphasized that the assistance they require is not a luxury but basic conditions necessary to observe Torah and commandments. Samuel Benjamin Kramer of Tzedek conveyed blessings on behalf of the organization's founder, Rabbi Moshe Margarten, who was unable to attend due to a last-minute urgent meeting in Washington with the head of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The highlight of the visit was when all Jewish inmates were allowed to enter the synagogue area to hear holy teachings and warm words of encouragement from the Satmar Rebbe. He inspired them to remain strong and not lose hope even in the most difficult circumstances. Afterwards, each inmate had a private audience with the Rebbe to share their concerns and receive his blessing.

Following the visit, representatives of Tzedek and community activists held an extended meeting with government officials and prison administration to address issues aimed at easing the hardships faced by Jewish prisoners in New York's correctional system. The meeting made a strong impression, and positive changes began to be implemented within days. The Jewish community continues to pray for mercy and the swift release of those suffering in captivity, hoping for a transition from darkness to light soon.
