Israeli Election Billboards Spark Controversy Across Cyprus

An Israeli election campaign has stirred controversy in Cyprus after billboards in Hebrew promoting the "Yashar!" party, led by Gadi Eisenkot, appeared across the island. These signs have drawn sharp criticism from local Cypriot figures as well as Israeli residents living in Cyprus.

Cypriot Member of the European Parliament, Fideas Panayiotou, publicly condemned the billboards on his X account, which has over 200,000 followers. He described the presence of the signs as part of a broader trend of increasing Israeli influence on the island, calling it an "Israeli takeover." Panayiotou emphasized that the billboards were not in Israel but in Cyprus, his home country, and expressed concern that this political advertising is just one example of a wider phenomenon.

He further noted that Hebrew-language real estate advertisements are becoming increasingly common throughout Cyprus, a development he finds unacceptable. Panayiotou urged the need to protect Cyprus's sovereignty against what he perceives as encroachment by Israeli interests. The incident highlights tensions surrounding Israel's growing presence in Cyprus and raises questions about the impact of foreign political campaigns and real estate marketing on the island's autonomy.
