Gadi Eisenkot's Election Billboard in Cyprus Vandalized Amid Local Backlash

A campaign billboard put up by Gadi Eisenkot, chairman of the Israeli party "Yashar!", in Cyprus was defaced with Palestinian flag colors about a week after its installation. The billboard was located on the road between Larnaca and Limassol and targeted Israeli tourists on the island as part of Eisenkot's election campaign.

The presence of Israeli election advertising in Cyprus sparked controversy, notably drawing sharp criticism from Cypriot Member of the European Parliament, Fidas Panayiotou. Panayiotou condemned the campaign as an "Israeli takeover" of Cypriot territory in a post on the social media platform X, where he has over 200,000 followers.

Leon Vidal, a Spanish Jew residing in Cyprus for a decade, also criticized Eisenkot's campaign, calling it a significant and unnecessary harm to the local community. Vidal questioned why the campaign targeted Cyprus instead of Greece, which hosts more Israeli tourists, and described the move as damaging to the region's reputation.

The CEO of the company involved in the campaign responded in an interview with Kan News, emphasizing that the billboard was intended to reach Israeli vacationers in a friendly country. He expressed concern over the antisemitic backlash and attributed it to the international decline in Israel's standing during Netanyahu's government. The campaign was approved by Cypriot advertisers and lasted ten days before being taken down, with no initial objections.

This incident highlights tensions surrounding Israeli political campaigning abroad and the sensitivities it can provoke in host countries, especially amid the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
