Gadi Eisenkot's Campaign Stunt Angers Israelis Online

Gadi Eisenkot, chairman of the "Yashar" party, has launched an aggressive election campaign targeting football fans, particularly those of Hapoel Be'er Sheva. He erected a large billboard in the Negev that read, "Juventus should have played here! Bringing security and football back to Israel." Eisenkot also posted on X, wishing Hapoel Be'er Sheva success in their Champions League qualifier against Sabaha, stating, "Our hearts are with you tonight. Bring pride to the Negev, the South, and all of Israel!"

The billboard references Hapoel Be'er Sheva's Europa League match against Italian club Juventus. Due to the ongoing security situation since October 7th, Israeli teams are hosting home games abroad, with Hapoel Be'er Sheva playing in Bucharest, Romania.

Critics argue that Eisenkot is ignoring the security considerations of the Football Association. Association chairman Shino Zuarz understands the risks, noting that a single missile strike during a foreign team's visit would severely damage Israeli football. However, Eisenkot's campaign is accused of prioritizing political gain over these concerns.

Social media users reacted negatively to Eisenkot's perceived populist move, sharing jokes and memes mocking the billboard and his campaign. One meme referenced the lack of a roof at Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv, satirizing Eisenkot's slogan.
