Israeli Party's Election Billboards in Cyprus Spark Controversy Over Sovereignty

Recently, the placement of election billboards by the Israeli party "Yashar!" led by Gadi Eizenkot across Cyprus has ignited a political controversy. Cypriot Member of the European Parliament, Fideas Panayiotou, publicly condemned the billboards, describing them as an "Israeli takeover" and emphasizing that the images were taken in Cyprus, not Israel. He expressed concern over the increasing presence of Hebrew-language advertisements on the island, including real estate promotions, warning that such actions threaten Cyprus's sovereignty.

An Israeli resident of Cyprus, who wished to remain anonymous, criticized the decision to place the billboards, calling it insensitive and poorly timed given Israel's delicate international relations and the perception of locals. The resident described the move as rude and indicative of a lack of understanding of local sentiments.

This incident comes amid broader discussions about election campaign regulations, including a recent call for mandatory labeling of AI-generated political advertisements and plans by MK Zini to present information on foreign interference in elections to the Knesset.
