Ashkelon Fisherman Catches and Immediately Releases Small Shark Back to Sea

Yossi Chanuka, a fisherman from Ashkelon, experienced an unexpected catch during what seemed like a routine day at sea when he hooked a small shark. The encounter was captured on video by Chanuka himself, showing him holding the shark briefly before releasing it back into the water. In an interview on the program "HaOlam HaBoker," Chanuka explained, "I saw the shark's head peeking out after I lifted it from the water and it was clear to me that I would release it."

Chanuka's respectful approach to marine life stems from a deep, lifelong connection to the sea that began in his childhood. For him, fishing is more than a profession or hobby; it is a spiritual experience and a profound bond with nature. "There is nothing as beautiful as the sea," he said. This ingrained love guided his instinctive decision to free the shark immediately.

Despite his skill as a fisherman, demonstrated by his previous catch of a massive 280-kilogram bluefin tuna, Chanuka emphasizes that the primary principle for him and his fellow fishermen is the protection of marine wildlife. "We have a duty to protect the sea's protected animals," he stated, highlighting the importance of environmental stewardship alongside fishing expertise.
