New Commentary on Talmudic Tractate Zeraim Continues Rabbi Rabinovitch's Legacy

The story · English

A special event was held at the Ma'ale Adumim Yeshiva to launch the book "Yad Kefsuta" on the Talmudic tractate Zeraim, continuing the lifelong project of Rabbi Nahum Eliezer Rabinovitch. The book, authored by Rabbi Shlomi Eldar and Zak Milenchik, aims to advance Rabbi Rabinovitch's interpretive approach known as "Yad Kefsuta." At the event, yeshiva rabbis congratulated the authors on completing this new installment of the project.

Rabbi Sabato opened the evening by emphasizing the deep connection between the agricultural commandments in Zeraim and faith, citing rabbinic teachings that sowing symbolizes belief in the eternal God. He highlighted the special significance of renewed study of Zeraim now that the Jewish people have returned to their land, calling it a "great challenge" requiring dedication and depth.

Rabbi Sabato also praised Rabbi Rabinovitch's method of studying Maimonides, describing it as a practical implementation of Rambam's teachings rather than mere theory. He noted the extensive research involved, including reviewing the entire Jerusalem Talmud and related rabbinic sources to fully understand each law. He expressed hope that the new book would broaden study of Zeraim, which historically received limited attention due to many laws being relevant only in Israel.

Co-author Rabbi Shlomi Eldar elaborated on the foundational thinking behind Rabbi Rabinovitch's approach, explaining that "Yad Kefsuta" reveals the broad principles underlying Rambam's rulings rather than isolated explanations. Eldar quoted Rabbi Rabinovitch's introduction, which calls for uncovering general rules to resolve many debates simultaneously. Eldar emphasized that the new volume applies these interpretive tools to areas Rabbi Rabinovitch had not yet completed, underscoring the tractate's contemporary relevance as these laws have regained practical application in Israel today.
