Israeli Renters Share Nightmarish Experiences With Unusual and Abusive Landlords

The story · English

Renting in Israel often involves more than just finding a suitable apartment; tenants frequently encounter bizarre, invasive, and sometimes threatening behavior from landlords. Social media users have shared disturbing stories revealing a dark side to the rental market, where landlords exploit the lack of regulation and tenants’ limited options.

One tenant, a young woman in her twenties, found her landlord resting on her balcony sofa uninvited during the day. Another woman, recently divorced, was asked by her landlord if he could stay overnight when visiting Tel Aviv. Some tenants described landlords breaking into their apartments, such as a student whose landlord forcibly entered at night, prompting a police call.

Other accounts include landlords hosting swinger parties in shared yards, urinating openly on communal lawns, and demanding unusual conditions like writing poems to qualify for a lease. One tenant recounted signing a contract with a 95-year-old landlord who opened the door naked and insisted on not wearing underwear during the lease signing, prolonging the meeting until after midnight.

A couple expecting a baby rented a ground-floor apartment with a yard, only to face repeated sewage problems due to illegal plumbing connections. When they decided to leave, the landlord threatened to sell their rent checks on the black market, despite not legally owning the apartment. This experience left them fearful and wary of future rentals.

These stories highlight the challenges Israeli renters face, including landlords’ erratic behavior, lack of legal protections, and the emotional toll of navigating a difficult housing market. Tenants emphasize the importance of thoroughly vetting landlords and contracts before committing to leases.
