Hundreds Seek to Join Israeli Kibbutz Hulit Nearly Three Years After October 7 Massacre

The story · English

Nearly three years after the October 7 massacre, in which Kibbutz Hulit lost 20 residents and workers, the deadliest event in its history, the community continues its recovery while showing signs of renewal. Since the war began, approximately 280 families have expressed interest in joining Hulit, with around ten new families expected to arrive as current members return in the coming months. Before the massacre, about 200 families lived in Hulit; roughly 130 are anticipated to return soon, while 70 families have yet to decide on their return timeline. The kibbutz expects the peak of residents’ return in August, when about half the community will be back, with the remainder returning gradually over the next year.

Alongside residents’ return, Hulit has developed a strategic plan aiming to expand the community to around 300 members within five years, focusing on attracting young families. Despite the trauma and prolonged evacuation, the kibbutz has continued its absorption process, advancing families who began joining before the attack. Interest has notably increased recently among reserve soldiers, partly through the “Homes for Fighters” initiative, which connects reservists with communities in Israel’s border and peripheral areas.

Yulia Vinterov, Hulit’s demographic growth coordinator, highlighted that joining the kibbutz now differs from before the war. New members are joining a community still recovering from a major crisis, with the August return marking a significant milestone. She emphasized that newcomers are not only joining but actively helping to shape the community’s future.

Physical rehabilitation of the kibbutz is ongoing, with homes being renovated, the dining hall renewed, the dairy expanded, and cultural and community buildings restored or rebuilt in preparation for residents’ return. Community manager Yoav Bukai expressed a strong emotional connection to the place, affirming the commitment to rebuild and grow. He described Hulit’s revival as a vital part of the broader recovery of the border region and the country, calling it the strongest response to the brutal attack and massacre.
