Hundreds Seek to Join Kibbutz Holit Nearly Three Years After Hamas Massacre

Since the outbreak of the war, approximately 280 families have applied to join Kibbutz Holit, according to data obtained by Walla. The kibbutz is preparing for the return of 130 veteran families in August to homes renovated after the October 7 Hamas attack. Before the attack, Holit was home to about 200 families and lost 20 residents and workers in the massacre. Alongside the 130 families expected to return soon, around 70 families have yet to decide on their return date, while 10 new families will complete absorption procedures and move in within the coming months.

Holit recently developed a strategic plan aiming to expand the community to 300 members within five years, focusing on absorbing young families. There is growing interest from reservist families, partly driven by the "Homes for Fighters" initiative connecting reservists with communities near the Gaza border. Julia Vintrova, the demographic growth coordinator, described the influx as "very moving," noting that newcomers want to be part of a community rebuilding itself and actively shaping its future.

Vintrova emphasized that joining Holit now differs from pre-war times, as the community is still recovering from a major crisis, with the peak of return expected in August. Renovations are underway, including private homes, the dining hall, the dairy expansion, and new community and public buildings. Community manager Yoav Bukai highlighted the strong connection residents feel to the place, stating, "We were clear that we would return, rehabilitate, and continue to build and be built." He added that Holit's revival is integral to the rehabilitation of the entire Gaza envelope region and the country, calling the kibbutz's growth "the strongest response to the horrific attack and massacre."
