Tisha B’Av, the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av, has been a central day of sorrow and mourning in Jewish history for thousands of years. The Mishnah in Tractate Taanit notes five calamities that befell the Jewish people on this day, but the sages declared it a day "appointed for weeping for generations." This day encapsulates the essence of Jewish grief, from the sin of the spies in the desert to the destruction of the Temples and the Holocaust.

The earliest tragedy linked to Tisha B’Av is the sin of the spies in 1312 BCE, when the Israelites despaired after hearing the spies’ report, leading God to decree 40 years of wandering in the desert. The First Temple was destroyed on Tisha B’Av in 586 BCE by Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylonian army after a brutal siege. Nearly 490 years later, in 70 CE, the Romans under Titus destroyed the Second Temple on the same date, killing over a million Jews and initiating the long exile known as the Diaspora.

Subsequent disasters include the fall of Betar in 135 CE, ending the Bar Kokhba revolt, and the Roman emperor Hadrian’s order in 136 CE to plow Jerusalem, renaming it Aelia Capitolina and banning Jews from entering. In medieval times, Jews were expelled from England in 1290 and France in 1306, both on or near Tisha B’Av. The 1391 massacres in Spain and the 1492 Alhambra Decree, which expelled Jews from Spain, also occurred around this date.

The 17th-century Khmelnytsky massacres devastated Eastern European Jewry during Tisha B’Av, and the outbreak of World War I was declared on this day in 1914. During the Holocaust, the Nazis began the mass deportation from the Warsaw Ghetto on Tisha B’Av in 1942, sending 300,000 Jews to Treblinka. More recently, the 1994 AMIA bombing in Buenos Aires, killing 85 people, took place on Tisha B’Av. In 2005, Israel’s disengagement from Gaza and northern Samaria began on this day, evoking deep communal pain.

Despite the profound sorrow associated with Tisha B’Av, Jewish tradition holds that the Messiah will be born on this day, transforming mourning into joy with the rebuilding of the Temple. This enduring hope underscores the resilience of the Jewish people through millennia of tragedy.
